In this video blog post, Ashley and Bill discuss the power of the Marzano Academies Lab school. 

Thanks to the book, Marzano Mastery Approaches, available through Marzano Resources (link), we know there is not single way to implement competency-based practices. It is a series of decisions a site makes that determine their unique vision of becoming a high reliability school that develops agency and ensurea achievement for all learners. A school could decide to build around Humanized Education by Mike Ruyle (link) or build their own system using the High Reliability Schools Framework created by Dr. Marzano as a measurement guide (link). 

At Marzano Academies we use a tight structure developed by Dr. Marzano that aligns with his vision of what a competency-based or standards-referenced school should be. When Dr. Marzano started Marzano Academies, a non-profit with the mission to develop schools that utilize competency-based practices, he said they will act as lighthouses to what public education can and should be. We readily admit not all schools are ready for the Academies model. But for those that are, the Lab School is the approach we recommend.
