Proficiency Scales - the Hub of the CBE Learning Classroom
Clarity is the foundation of ownership. When learning goals remain abstract or compressed inside broad standards, students struggle to see the pathway forward—and teachers struggle to pinpoint where support is most needed. Proficiency scales solve this problem by making the learning progression visible.
This six-session coaching series guides educators through the complete arc of proficiency scale development and implementation—from understanding their purpose to building high-quality scales and using them to track student growth in real time.
Participants will:
-
Deepen their understanding of the why, how, and what of proficiency scales
-
Unpack standards to identify critical content and essential outcomes
-
Construct aligned scales with clear Level 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 progressions
-
Learn how to introduce scales so students actively use them
-
Design systems for tracking individual and whole-class progress
-
Use evidence of learning to inform instructional next steps
Each session includes targeted feedback, structured application between meetings, and guided refinement of participants’ work. The result is not simply a completed document—it is a coherent system that supports clarity, agency, and mastery learning in the classroom.
By the end of the series, educators will have developed fully usable proficiency scales and the routines necessary to make scales an integrated part of daily instruction.
